My Ninth Novel or Twelfth Book

Magenta Fleurs Book Cover by Adrian Pasarin

Magenta Fleurs is my ninth novel or twelfth book! How did I ever get this far? Am I any good? I don’t know ask an expert. However, they don’t read Indies’s or unknown authors. They edit and read New York Times Bestseller’s right? And Booker Prize finalist’s and the long list or short list of books. What’s an author to do that doesn’t have a MFA in Writing?

Well, if you like writing and you’re a good speller with a great memory, then write a book, edit it, cover it and publish it. Be scared. Of course, you don’t want to get sued by anyone so follow the rules as best you can. No you don’t have a lawyer looking over your manuscript, therefore a bit of fear creeps in like, “Oh No! What have I done?”

Relax, it’s only words from the English language and there’s been thousands of writers writing much worse than you. Maybe writing crime is a guy’s thing as women are so scared and afraid. Maybe they keep us afraid, actually. Time to set the record straight, women have a keen eye for justice, liberty, and how to spot a fake. Aha, by George, you think you’ve done it. You’ve written a pretty good book. If not, you can try, try again. And so you do …

Here is my ninth novel, and twelfth book in all, over ten years. I’m a nurse, mother, stylist and yes, a writer. After ten years I’m not perfect but I can write a paragraph in seconds and get to the point fairly quickly. I can write a book and publish it in 3-4 months. Not bad, eh? I want to go to the next step and the one after that: readers, more books, and sales.

My books are available for a summer read or perhaps a fall picnic or winter tea by the fire. Your choice, your way, right here on the net from Amazon, Barnes&Noble, Kobo, Smashwords and numerous others.

I Always Wanted to Write a Novel

I Always Wanted to Write a Novel

Mission Impossible. No, not the movie, but possibly how you feel about your dream. Last night you had that recurring dream that you were going to tackle the list of ten things to do before you can’t. Travel, cook, read, dance, hike, get married, get divorced, go to a play at the Fox Theatre, or maybe check out the symphony. The first item on the list is write a novel. You say to yourself, “I’ll start the day after I retire,” which is next month.

A coworker tells you about the Atlanta Writers Club. And here you are at their monthly meeting. The president tells the audience that everyone has a beginning and you find yourself nodding in agreement. You smile, sit back and take some notes. At the break you find yourself wandering around feeling mighty green, until you meet someone and it is their first time also. Well, at least you’re here working on that bucket list before time runs out. Ready. Set. Go.

Next up is a firsthand account of how to write a novel by a member who did just that. Please welcome Caroline Clemens to the stage. (She thanks everyone for being here and tells us to take out our notebooks and write fast!) “This is for the 18-99 year old first timer, any other profession besides an MFA, and someone with a story to tell. Follow this and you can write a book over the next 6-12 months. Purchase or gather up pens, notebooks, a thesaurus, and a computer. Use your name or a pen name and stick with it, start a WordPress blog, keep passwords handy, and figure out what type of book you want to write. Is there a story inside you, or do you just like a particular genre? Purchase a book or two of your favorite author, genre, or general interest. This will help with details when you get to the end of the road.

If you have never written anything and feel very green, then join a poetry group online. I joined d-Verse Poets Pub and stayed with them for over a year eventually having enough material for a collection of poems. Writing poetry gets the language moving, the words are enticing and your brain responds creatively. Join a writing group if you like, I was unable to do this with three kids to escort around town, school, cooking and homework, and later a job. I followed other writing blogs and derived my critique and inspiration from them. If you have a title, great, if not don’t worry it will come. You are going to learn along the way. You are going to Atlanta Writers Club meetings, starting a blog, following a poetry and/or other writing blogs, purchased your writing items, lit a candle, turned on some inspirational music, or silence, and hence the next step is it.

Don’t be scared, this is where I help. On the first few pages of the notebook write the title, plot, places, character names, genre, and any notes you want to remember about the story. On a single page write the title, plot, first sentence, last sentence and desired word count. This will keep you motivated and on task towards the goal. The next four pages, leave pages in between for when you change something and rip it out, will be the outline. According to how many words construct an appropriate amount of chapters. Do you like long chapters, or short? Once you know the amount of words per chapter then set down the chapters with headings or a story flow. Now you have something to refer to when you get all mixed up or forgetful. I wrote out in notebooks by hand my first four or five novels this way, then typed them to the computer. This is the very fun part because you’ve done an extraordinary amount of work and now you can add or delete at will. Have fun!

Read a paragraph out loud to see if it flows. Edit yourself-then find an editor who may be a friend or from a group, even a professional one for hire. When you have completed typing it to the computer, and edited the manuscript, find yourself a cover! I use Self-Pub Covers online and the cost is about $75-$125. You will want to write a back cover and this can be very tricky. Get out that favorite author of yours and read their back cover-look at the insides, etc. Teach yourself. I eventually found an editor who makes my manuscript look perfect on the page, but you can use someone like XLibris to format your book. These two costs are around $100-$400. My books are now with Ingram Spark who is a book distributor. They distribute everywhere around the globe in print or digital. Mine are available on Amazon/Barnes & Noble and other venues. I have just started the marketing process so I’ll be working on that part of bookselling.

Finally, it sounds like so much to do but it isn’t-it works right from you. You are master of your fate, maybe for once in your life you write the details and tell people what to say. After I wrote four or five books I turned the page and just like that improved upon my own process. What did I have to lose? I now use yellow tablets, putting the title, plot, characters, word count, genre, places, and a full six page outline with headings, storyline, etc. and type to the computer from this. This was a magnificent accomplishment of mine. I’ve heard Scrivener has a tool and I may try that next time. I’ve been writing for nine years now, and hopefully my marketing will help me to sell and make a few bucks. Readers, reviews, and a positive query are the prizes and I wish that for all of us. I Always Wanted to Write a Novel.”

Thank you. Best,

Caroline Clemens

A Novel Idea

ANINov19

Thank you to Crema Espresso Gourmet for hosting us November 12th! And a special thanks to the attendees. We enjoyed giving information about our book creations followed by readings. This is a lovely venue in the heart of Dunwoody which is just north of Atlanta.

I read from my historical fiction “Chocolate for Lilly” set in the 1920’s Gilded Age eastern seaboard of America and gifted a few of my novels to readers. In addition I read my favorite poem I wrote about the fairy tale The Little Match Girl. My title for this is “I Dreamt One Night.” You can find that poem in my collection of poems in “Autumn Quotes.” All are available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble and other online venues in digital and print.

Novelist Caroline Clemens at Artists Alley & Decatur Book Festival

Caroline Clemens is pleased to inform her readers of her recent experience with the Atlanta Writers Club at Artists Alley. The first ever Alpha Con was booked at the Alpharetta Library as an all day event!

IMG_7927

This also happened to be her very first book signing in public. She was thrilled! George Weinstein was in attendance. He is the president of the writers club and is also in charge of the Atlanta Writers Conferences which are held twice a year downtown Atlanta in the spring and fall.

It was a busy day in August-somewhat hot, but hey, we already expected that. The library is gorgeous and sits next to a park like setting with grass and trees. We were outside along the brick corridor and shaded. Thank you to the librarians for this fun event. Later that night they held a contest for the best costume. I’m awaiting photos.

Caroline will be at her next event in downtown Decatur, Georgia. This Decatur Book Festival is one of the largest in the country and draws huge crowds with much to do! She’s been twice before and met so many people from the writing world. This time she will be in the Atlanta Writers Tent signing from 4-5 PM. Find her there both days Saturday the 31st, and Sunday the 1st.

Caroline will have on hand several of her print books at a reduced price of $5 and $10. She says she can’t wait to finish “Magenta Fleurs” and will seek a publisher for this title. She feels ready to write, print, publish and would be able to put forth more in a timely manner. Wish her luck. It’s a hard road “self-publishing.” Doable and rewarding, however, one must never turn down help from others!

Last year Caroline even wrote a screenplay and submitted this in a contest. What this did was force her to learn how to do it. Compelling and true, Caroline hopes to find a way to reach more readers, write more, be involved, and feel successful in her own right. Thank you for following and purchasing the indies art of storytelling.

Hello WordPress Followers!

I’m still here. Unbelievable. WordPress has taught me many things but patience is not one of them. I already had that. I was born patient. I learned to work hard which came naturally and to show the  world kindness. When you are faced up against hatred and utterly mean people, well, that can be treacherous and gut punching to say the least. Still, here I am.

I’m proud to announce that my last two books are in print and digital reads at your favorite online stores! Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, and Smashwords all have them available. The print will be here May 31st. Pre order if you like and you’ll have that INDIE summer read at the beach or up in your cabin in the woods.

I’ve written a spy-thriller (surveillance & the phone) and a historical fiction (set in the ’20’s). I hope to write sequels for both-we’ll see if we get a good interest. Thanks for following me and watching me grow as a writer. Isn’t it funny I always had a name for me as a writer? I just never started until 2011.

I was motivated by love of the written word-it was just waiting for me to find it. Only heaven knows and the spirit within me why I finally did it. I believe I fell in love, properly.

Hello WordPress Followers!

Oh, how I’ve grown as a writer and publisher. That cannot be discounted. It’s one thing to write a 30K word novella, then progress to a 50K + word novel; but to edit, critique, and publish on four online venues is insurmountable! This do it yourself minus a MFA college degree is frustrating, and more than disappointing when you think you’ve been given a great tip only to find out you’ve been sabotaged. You must listen to others because you are starting from scratch, though, I’ve found the internet to be filled with trolls, and nay-sayers, plus inaccuracies. Then again, I’m still here and trying. Why? Because I did find authentic, wonderful writers willing to give me a focus and keep trying.

You know what I like? Exactly the same thing I did as when I started. I like putting together a unique idea from myself and making a small production of it. It is like making and sewing a dress, performing on stage in a theatre production, singing in a choir, traveling, or even making a family and trying to get the parenting right. You keep working it and using all the information at your disposal. It is uniquely you.

My next book release is forthcoming. My best friend influenced me when she said (she’s a huge reader of mystery-crime), you got to kill some people in your book. What? Me kill someone. I’m a nurse we put people back together, that’s my calling. She’s the big reader so I took Shannan’s advice. I’m looking forward to getting some input on this one.

I’ve had it professionally critiqued-she liked it, and queried it out there. Just because nobody picks it up doesn’t mean its not good. The agents and editors don’t have time or are too busy. Once again, I’ll do it alone. Sad face without tears. My wishes go unanswered. Of course, I HOPE someone pounds their fist on a desk when it sells well and they missed an opportunity by dropping me off into the trashcan beside their desk.

Finally, take a look up top at my header image and you’ll see the the cover image for “THREE KING MACKEREL AND A MAHI MAHI” along with my other book covers. Yes, that’s the title and its way more than fishing. The genre is spy-thriller with a romantic element for adults. I’ll be looking for readers-so pass it forward. My estimated release date is February 10-17th! It will be on Apple, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, and Smashwords. Surveillance is creepy.

Think Pulp Fiction marries Fried Green Tomatoes while wanting a 007 life.

Welcome to my author site! I’ve been extremely busy this week, therefore, I’ll keep this short as I know you are shopping, putting up a tree, or attending parties.

Above is my newest novel that I uploaded 12/2/17 to Amazon per digital reads. Here’s the link:   carolineclemensamazonsales

This novel is my historical fiction debut set in the 1920’s. If you scroll down you can read the query letters I sent out to individuals to obtain traditional publishing. Self-publishing is doable, though, more difficult. You must do everything yourself. I’m still here-so we will see about the outcome.

Thank you for following me in this endeavor and for the encouragement I receive. I do enjoy putting the story together and look for readers to leave a review. If you have read one of my books-please leave a review.

I have uploaded all six of my books, some with new covers done by Daniela Owergoor from Brazil. All six are available per digital reads and three are available via print. Thank you Dani from Bella Media Management. They look terrific and are extremely eye-catching.

I hope to do a podcast or You Tube video in the new year. I’ve asked my daughter to ask the question. Stay tuned. I will be working on a novella based upon Thanksgiving. That is my NaNoWriMo 2017. A bit late but I saved it for January. I’ll be resettling my girls as they are changing colleges midway through the first year. I’m looking for January to go smoother. I’ve applied to a couple job positions and hopefully I’ll get employed this coming February.

Thank you for stopping by and I wish you well. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! May your joys last the whole year.

Sincerely,

Caroline Clemens

Books and Such

Today’s author brings with her several selections to include romance, poetry, and holiday novellas.  Welcome, Caroline Clemens!

Kiss Ride     The first book/novella I ever wrote. I went back and changed the names to protect the innocent. Ha ha, actually I just was nervous and had no idea what I was getting into. This sweet little story is about my sister meeting her future husband on the train in Atlanta.

Into the Vines   This second book is three novels in one, a trilogy titled the Vintage Blue Trilogy. I wrote it over three years and it has around 177K words. I received nice reviews from family and friends but couldn’t market it further. Believe me I tried. It’s a coming of age story, a contemporary family drama, and bits of magical realism entwined. For me it’s a classic novel and it travels across continents. It has a happily ever after…

SOMEDAY

Here’s my cover reveal for SOMEDAY! I’ve loaded it onto Amazon and Barnes & Noble for digital e books. (Should be ready for sale by 10/12/2017). I’ll do the print later-more time consuming, and I’m not exactly sure of that process for self-publishing. This title was previously published as Bleu Moon. I’ve updated the cover and re-titled this beautiful story to reach more readers. I hope you pass it forward and help me out as an author. Thanks.

SOMEDAY

A family is formed on a vineyard through missions performed by a pilot who rescues stranded souls from around the globe. This high concept coming of age contemporary novel transports us through the pilot’s business named “ANGIE.” Think Out of Africa meets Top Gun while vacationing Under the Tuscan Sun!

Hawa and Francis enter this family through unforeseen extreme circumstances and one follows their hearts while they find the way in this coming of age story.

How will they help this global family in their family operations of special rescues across continents? How does one of Olivier’s best friends, a jazz singer from the Bleu, find out about his secret business? And why is her son involved? The island of Maupiti holds many clues; what does Darlene find there? Besides maybe love?

Enjoy this beautifully written novel, twice granted honorable mention awards! Available tomorrow at online shopping sites: Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Cover by Dani Orweergor from Brazil at Self Published Covers.
